Skull Mounts

Whitetail BuckWhitetail Buck
There are three significant steps in doing a skull mount. They are flesh removal, degreasing, and whitening/finishing.

For flesh removal, Clean Bone LLC uses dermestid beetles and/or maceration depending on the species and/or the freshness of the specimen. These approaches are used by museums to clean bones and skulls for their exhibits and are widely used by those specializing in bone cleaning. Another method for cleaning skulls is simmering. Some of the reasons that the simmering technique is not more broadly used and why Clean Bone LLC doesn't employ the technique is that it has been shown to cause shrinkage which can alter skull measurements, it can damage fine bones such as those in the nasal cavity, and it can make the mount much more brittle.

Degreasing is the step that is the most time consuming in doing a quality mount. It involves removing the fats and oils from the skull. If this is not properly done, the skull will turn yellow over time.

Finishing usually consists of whitening the skull. In addition to whitening, a sealant can also be applied. Whether or not to apply a sealant depends on individual preference. Many like the more natural appearance of not having a sealant applied; others like the appearance that is obtained by applying either flat or glossy clear sealant. A growing number of people are choosing to apply a camoflauge paint to their mount. We offer this for an additional charge (see Camo Dipping for more details).
